Course Aim:
Graduate are able to apply multi-disciplinary engineering principles to make significant contributions into the energy space
Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification
The purpose of this qualification is to develop knowledge and skills in the renewable energy sector especially wind, solar and biofuel. It will enable learners to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of wind, solar and biofuel energy systems-at utility, commercial and domestic scale. They will be equipped with skills that will enable them to provide solutions in a wide variety of mechanical engineering problems. It will also provide learners with the introductory knowledge, cognitive and conceptual tools and practical skills for further higher education in mechanical engineering and renewable energy disciplines.
Qualified learners will be equipped with knowledge and skills that will enable them to be prepared to enter the mechanical engineering and renewable energy labour market.
Professional Registration
The programme is yet to be accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as it was offered for the first time in 2022. The accreditation visit will be done in 2023.
Opportunities:
Opportunities abound in energy production, energy distribution, energy transmission and energy mamanagement industries.
Admission requirements:
• A 360 credit National Diploma/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification at NQF L6, or
• A 240 credit Diploma in Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification together with 120 WIL credits (aligned to the ECSA E-21-PN standard for the Advanced Certificate in Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering or a related field).
All international qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) before submission of the application (visit www.saqa.org.za). Once the qualification has been evaluated and the applicant meets the minimum admission requirements (NQF level 6) of the programme the applicant could apply through the normal application process.
Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) is in line with the CPUT RPL policy.
