CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (HONOURS) IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING.

Course Aim:
The course aims to provide excellent theoretical and practical chemical engineering knowledge and skills relevant to the needs of the chemical industry and society at large. Graduates of this programme will have the competence to apply engineering skills to chemical engineering problems and plant operations.

The Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours in Chemical Engineering (BEngTech Hons) is a postgraduate specialisation qualification to prepare students for research-based postgraduate study. It will provide the learning path to the Master in Engineering in Chemical Engineering from the Advanced Diploma in Chemical Engineering or the Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Chemical Engineering.

The BEngTech (Hons) (Chemical Engineering) programme has a core of Chemical Engineering subjects with a focus on mathematical modelling and process computation, which is a particular strength of the Department of Chemical Engineering at CPUT. It provides the necessary exposure to research methodology and project work, which will be further expanded on at the Master’s level.

Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification
Purpose:
The Purpose of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours in Chemical Engineering is to build the necessary knowledge, understanding, abilities and skills required for further learning towards becoming a competent practising Chemical Engineering Technologist or Certified Engineering Technologist.

Rationale:
The qualification is aimed at preparing learners for research-based postgraduate study. The qualification is aligned with the Engineering Council of South Africa guidelines and strives to provide the industry with a qualifying learner having the following attributes:
• Consolidates and deepens the learner's expertise in a specialised area of chemical engineering and develops research capacity in the methodology and techniques of chemical engineering.
• Work independently and responsibly, applying original thought and judgment to technical and risk-based decisions in complex situations.
• Have a broad, fundamental-based appreciation of chemical engineering sciences, with depth in specific areas and knowledge of financial, commercial, legal, social and economic, health, safety and environmental matters.

Professional Registration
The qualification is aligned with the Engineering Council of South Africa guidelines to apply for a professional technologist

Opportunities:
Graduates may be involved at any stage of a chemical engineering project, from conception to selling the final product. These stages include research and development, economic evaluation, design, equipment manufacture, plant construction and commissioning, plant operation, product sales and service.

Employment is found in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, fertilisers, fuel technology, oil refining, minerals processing, chemical manufacturing, and synthetic fibres. Opportunities also exist in environmental consultancy and government, and Higher Education. Those who attain this qualification will provide companies with skills that include trouble shooting in chemical plants, process plant optimisation, process development and process design.

Admission requirements:
The minimum admission requirements are:
• An NQF level 7, Advanced Diploma; Bachelor of Engineering Technology; or Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering or a cognate qualification.
Students should obtain an average of 60% for the qualification, or 60% in the final year of the NQF level 7 qualification, or if the applicant does not have the average of 60%, an additional requirement of at least 12 months of relevant Chemical Engineering experience post obtaining the NQF level 7 qualification would be required.

If the applicant has an international qualification, that qualification must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority Unit for Evaluation of Foreign Qualifications before submission of the application (visit www.saqa.org.za).

Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) is in line with the CPUT RPL policy. Visit the RPL page for more information
