BACH OF ENG TECH HON IN COMPUTER ENG
Course Aim:
The aim of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Honours) in Computer Engineering is to prepare and deepen candidates in computer related engineering experience in a specific discipline at the same time developing research capacity to undertake professional work and to make a contribution to the economy and national development. The Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours Degree enhances the application of research and development as well as specialist and contextual knowledge to meet the minimum entry requirement for admission to a cognate Master’s degree.
Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification
The purpose of this qualification is to provide a foundation of research capacity in modern computer engineering technology. The Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours in Computer Engineering prepares learners for research-based postgraduate study. This qualification consolidates and deepens the learner's expertise in a particular discipline and develops research capacity in the methodology and techniques of that discipline. This qualification demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence.
This qualification has two objectives.
• To provide a foundation of research capacity in modern computer engineering technology and a pathway to access the research higher degrees of Master’s and Doctorate that are currently offered by the department as well as other universities.
• The proposed honours degree will provide a year of specialization in computer engineering and related topics.
Professional Registration
The Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Computer Engineering will be assessed later in 2023 for provisional accreditation by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
Opportunities:
Computer engineering graduates research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as circuit boards. Computer hardware engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, and routers.
Computer engineers ensure that computer hardware components work together with the latest software. Therefore, hardware engineers often work with software developers. For example, the hardware and software for mobile phones and other devices frequently are developed at the same time.
Admission requirements:
• An NQF level 7, Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering or a cognate qualification, or
• An NQF level 7, Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a cognate qualification, or
• An NQF level 7, Bachelor of Technology in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a cognate qualification.
If the applicant has an international qualification, that qualification must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority Unit for Evaluation of Foreign Qualifications before submission of the application (visit www.saqa.org.za).
