CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AND QUANTITY SURVEYING
POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN CONSTRUCTION.

Course Aim:
The aim of postgraduate education is to provide students with the environment to develop knowledge and skills to make effective contributions to their disciplines and to the rapidly changing world. This qualification is designed to prepare learners for Master’s study through the deepening of their knowledge and understanding of theories, methodologies and practices, as well as through the application of advanced problem solving to construction project management related problems, advice on the design of appropriate construction methods and programmes in big enterprises and the management and delivery of construction projects in such enterprises.

Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification
The contents of the Postgraduate Diploma in Construction qualification are structurally designed to prepare the graduates as construction professionals/managers and lead to further professional Master’s and Doctorate degrees. The curriculum is benchmarked and designed to meet the current and future needs of construction professions and industry.

The qualification has been designed to meet this need through development of competencies at NQF level 8. The structure of the designed Post Graduate Diploma in Construction qualification will be a national collaboration between all Higher Education Institutions, particularly our counterparts from the Universities of Technology who will be offering the same qualification. This proposal is the culmination of a wide consultative process which included Professional Quantity Surveyors and Project and Construction Management companies and construction professional bodies such as SACQSP and SACPCMP.

Professional Registration
Graduates may be eligible for particular categories of membership of:
• The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP).
• The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB Southern Africa)
• The South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP).

Opportunities:
Employment opportunities are many and varied. The main areas of employment are with building contractors and professional quantity surveyors. Opportunities also exist for self- employment, or employment in property development, with mining houses, financial and insurance institutions, with state and semi-state departments and in marketing with retailers and manufacturers in the construction industry.

Admission requirements:
The minimum admission requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma in Construction will be the HEQSF level 7 aligned qualifications outlined below:
• A 120 credit Advanced Diploma in one of the fields of: Quantity Surveying; Construction Management; Construction Health and Safety, and Facility Management or other Built Environment related field (Civil Engineering or Architectural Technology) with an average pass mark of at least 60%.
• A Bachelor of Technology (BTech) qualification in one of the fields of: Quantity Surveying; Construction Management; Construction Health and Safety, and Facility Management or other Built Environment related field (Civil Engineering or Architectural Technology) with an average pass mark of at least 60%.
• BSc in Construction or Built Environment related field of study or Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering Technology in related field of study.

An applicant who is in possession of an Advanced Diploma or BTech in the field of: Quantity Surveying; Construction Management; Construction Health and Safety, and Facility Management and does not obtain an average mark of 60% for the final year subjects may apply if the applicant is in possession of at least 12 months of construction related experience post obtaining the above-mentioned qualifications.

If the applicant has an international qualification, that qualification must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority Unit for Evaluation of Foreign Qualifications before submission of the application (visit www.saqa.org.za).
