Course Aim:
The purpose of the qualification is to provide students with an advanced understanding of applications development and to apply the critical competencies and skills in this specialised field. The Advanced Diploma in Information Technology in Applications Development is designed to produce a graduate with the requisite specialist theoretical and practical skills in the latest technologies and tools employed within the field. This programme will deepen the student's knowledge and develop the student's applied competence in analysing, interpreting, understanding and applying of applications development technologies and tools. It further develops the intellectual independence, research and professional skills of the student.

A rapidly changing technological and digital landscape demands practitioners and experts that can understand, respond to, and further the aims of the industries they serve. It also requires graduates that can research, reflect, innovate, problem solve and integrate knowledge in a discipline specific way while serving general or specific societal needs.
The Advanced Diploma in Information Technology in Applications Development is built on the foundations laid by the Diploma in ICT. It aims to advance applied and general skills and offer a degree of specialization in the general Applications Development field. This specialization is one of the core disciplines in ICT. The focus of Applications Development is not limited to computer programming but also includes database technologies, website and mobile application design and implementation. In addition, learners will be exposed to advanced concepts in software engineering which include frameworks and architecture. Furthermore, the Advanced Diploma is structured in such a way that it prepares students for an academic career path should they wish to continue with a postgraduate diploma.


Opportunities:
The Advanced Diploma in Information Technology in Applications Development graduates will exit into industry and be able to occupy the following professions: junior programmer, developer; software quality assurance tester; database administrator; web developer; and mobile applications developer.
In addition, graduates may find themselves able to apply their skill sets to the following related professions in due course: ICT project leader, project manager; data scientist; ICT trainer; software analyst; systems analyst; and solutions architect.


Admission requirements:
A 360 credit Diploma in ICT in the field of specialisation with an average of 60% for the major subjects in the third year of the qualification.
A 360 credit National Diploma in IT with an average of 60% for the major subjects in the third year of the qualification.
A consonant diploma or degree qualification relevant to the specialisation field or any relevant computer science degree with a minimum of 60% in the final year of the qualification.
Applicants who do not meet the minimum admission requirements may be considered for admission based on recognition of prior learning, and/or prior work experience provided there are space available.
