INTERIOR DESIGN
ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN INTERIOR DESIGN

Course Aim:
The part-time and full-time Advanced Diploma in Architectural Technology (AT) and the Advanced Diploma in Interior Design (ID) programmes are offered in parallel. These qualifications comprise a flexible, online, blended learning design, with on-campus block weeks each term, supplemented by online sessions during the remainder of the term.  Part-time students have four one-week blocks per year (one per term) and full-time students have eight one-week blocks per year (two per term). The programmes entail three theory-based subjects that build foundational knowledge, skills and attitudes (part-time year 1) and two studio-based subjects, dedicated to the application and demonstration of the competencies learnt (part-time year 2). Full-time students take all five subjects together in one year. Part-time students complete the course over a two-year period. In the first year of part-time study, all the theory subjects are completed (INL; INP; ENV), in the second year of part-time study, all the practical studio subjects are completed (IND; INT).

The CPUT Advanced Diploma programmes are designed to promote access and allow multiple pathways to further qualifications.

You can study from your home town, without added accommodation expense (You are expected to be on campus during the block weeks only.)
If you're working and based outside SA, you don't need a study visa

Recognition of Prior Learning acceptance route:
If you don't have the relevant Diploma but you're 23 or older and you have extensive practice experience within the interior design/architecture/decorating field, you may apply for advanced standing via RPL to access the Advanced Diploma. Please register your online application with the Recognition for Prior Learning Office. Also please contact the Advanced Diploma in Interior Design year coordinator, if you have questions pertaining to the portfolio of evidence required by RPL candidates.

If you are 23 years or older and have extensive practice experience, you may apply via RPL for subject credits, that may enable you to access the year 2 of the programme. A rigorous quality review is conducted to assess the eligibility for credits.

The Advanced Diploma is at NQF level 7 and replaces the BTech degree qualification

The Advanced Diploma gives access to Honours Degree and Postgraduate Diploma programmes

Students are encouraged and supported to join the professional community

Students are encouraged to register with The African Institute of the Interior Design Professions (IID), which is the professional body representing the Interior Design industry in South Africa. An Advanced Diploma graduate would aspire to register as a Professional Interior Designer, as soon as they have gained adequate work experience, as stipulated by the IID and satisfied the IID National Council of his/her professional competence. For part-time students, the two years work experience, which  is accommodated in the programme, makes it possible for graduates to record their industry monthly training records and obtain registration soon after graduation. This blended model consists of:
- four block weeks per year for part-time students / eight block weeks per year for full-time students
- online synchronous and asynchronous learning
- full-time or freelance employment with an Interior Design professional (part-time students only)
The integrated work-study blend is instrumental in offering supportive links with the Profession. It enables the students to obtain the IID recommended practical work experience, which supports them in registering as a Professional Interior Designer, one year after graduation.

Theory-based subjects (full-time / part-time year 1):
Interior Practice 4, Environmental Design 4 and Interior Literacy 4.

Studio-based subjects (full time / part-time year 2):
Interior Design 4 and Interior Technology 4.

A part-time student may repeat only one of the year 1 subjects in year 2.

A full-time student needs to be registered for all five subjects: Interior Practice, Environmental Design, Interior Literacy, Interior Design and Interior Technology.
Demonstrate knowledge of design and interior technology for retail and corporate buildings with the ability to develop an effective design response and bespoke interior furniture solutions.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of interior practice and the ability to develop interior documentation for retail and corporate building.
Demonstrate knowledge of the theory and history of interior design and the ability to develop well informed interior design solutions.
Demonstrate the competent application of a range of interior literacy skills.

Graduates are capable of independently researching technological innovations, and developing professional interior design and detailing proposals for the interiors of buildings. The competency of an interior designer would include the design and technical detailing, which respond to relevant and appropriate interior design solutions. Their skills will include the design and management of both the public and private sectors within the built environment.

Advanced Diploma graduates will be independent thinkers that can assimilate broad aspects of information, analyse complex problems and compile findings into coherent, relevant and appropriate interior design solutions. Graduates are socially responsive and are aware of environmental concerns, their work reflects an understanding of their responsibility in this regard. The qualifying learner will have the competence to apply creativity, problem-solving, specialised knowledge and management principles to the practical implementation of interior design solutions, through appropriate research.
The Advanced Diploma in Interior Design programme is designed to accommodate a diverse student body including Diploma in Interior Design and Diploma in Architectural Technology graduates, returning CPUT graduates, graduates from Higher Education Institutions across South Africa and the SADC countries, and mature and working professionals. Applicants who don’t meet the minimum academic requirements, are invited to apply via a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.
