OPHTHALMIC
BACHELOR OF HEALTH SCIENCE IN OPTICIANRY

Course Aim:
To provide the graduates with the minimum requirements for accreditation and registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Dispensing Optician. A qualified learner will be competent to analyse an optometric prescription and apply ophthalmic and management skills in order to provide the optimum visual appliance to the patient. They will also be competent to perform visual screening. The qualification will also provide sufficient practitioners to maintain high standards of eye care, in order to address the eyecare needs of the community.

Opportunities:
A dispensing optician registers with the HPCSA as an Independent Practitioner and may therefore set up their own ophthalmic dispensing practice. The optician may work in the private or public health care sector or else work in the wholesale industry in optical laboratories. The registered dispensing optician has a number of exciting opportunities available to them including employment with:

Ophthalmic lens laboratories
Optical industry representatives
Private optometry/ opticianry or ophthalmology practice
Public sector hospitals
Dedicated private sector eye clinics.

National Senior Certificate (Umalusi, Grade 12) with a Bachelor’s pass:

English Home Language or First Additional Language (4)
Mathematics (4); or Mathematical Literacy (5)
