BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (HONOURS) IN CIVIL ENGINEERING.
Course Aim:
The implementation of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Degree (BEng Tech) in Civil Engineering requires an articulation route to post-graduate studies and fulfilling the new impetus towards aligning current qualifications with the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF, 2013). The qualification demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence aiming at developing research capacity and highly skilled experts in Civil Engineering.
Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification
The Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours Degree in Civil Engineering BEng Tech Hons (Civil) is a specialised (lower level) post post-graduate qualification which prepares students for research-based post - graduate studies. Hence, this qualification provides an opportunity for strong professional training which is focused on career development thereby improving technical proficiency, and consequently addressing the shortage of critical and scarce skills in the country.
The Strategic Plan of the Department is guided by Faculty goal of producing graduates who are technologically adept in applying technology, with an emphasis on curriculum renewal and development. The Qualification will enhance skills development locally and regionally thereby underpinning our role as a University of Technology and enhancing our vision of becoming the heart of technology, education and innovation in Africa and beyond.
The qualification serves to consolidate and deepen the student's expertise in a particular discipline and to develop research capacity. It follows a BEngTech degree, Advanced Diploma or relevant level NQF Level 7 qualification. Specifically, the qualification provides students with: -
• Preparation for careers in engineering itself and areas that potentially benefit from engineering skills, for achieving technological proficiency and to make a contribution to the economy and national development; and
• Entry to NQF level 9 MEng programme
Professional Registration
The qualification may form part of a combination of qualifications to meet the educational requirements for registration in the category of Candidate Professional Engineer with the statutory body which regulates the engineering field (ECSA).
