BIOMED
PHD IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Course Aim:
The main aim of the course is to advance knowledge through original research in the field of health and/or biomedical sciences. The goal of biomedical research is to provide comprehensive and detailed understanding of the mechanisms that underlie the development and normal function of humans and other living organisms and thereby gain insights into the pathological and pathophysiological mechanisms that cause diseases. A detailed understanding of these mechanisms and pathways is essential for identifying potential targets for rational therapeutic interventions, and for disease prevention. Although biomedical research is an important component of clinical success, the scope of biomedical research is, broad, ranging from the study of single molecules to the complex functions and behaviours of the whole organism. Therefore, the aim of this qualification is to develop outstanding researchers who have a deep understanding of biomedical scientific, practical and policy issues, and who can meaningfully contribute to the knowledge economy of South Africa.

Opportunities:
Graduates with a PhD in Biomedical Sciences can apply for positions in:
Academic and tertiary Universities both locally and internationally.
Research laboratories
Diagnostic laboratories
Pharmaceutical industry

PhD graduates are often not limited to academia and research as many organisations in the private sector value the independent, critical thinking that PhD graduates bring to organisations.
