Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification
Purpose
The purpose of this proposed HEQSF aligned Post Graduate Diploma (PGDip) in Engineering Management is to produce graduates by strengthening and deepening the learner’s knowledge in the field of engineering management, as this relates to leading, planning, organizing and controlling socio-technical business systems, computers, machines and equipment, people and projects. This programme will consolidate and deepen the student's skill and expertise in engineering management, develop competence to solve complex problems; and lay the foundation for research capacity in the methodology and techniques of engineering management.
Graduates will be able to apply management practices that are based on sound engineering and scientific principles, drawing on in-depth knowledge of mathematical sciences, natural sciences, engineering sciences, engineering design and synthesis and complementary studies. It is to enable graduates to undertake advanced reflection and development by means of a systematic approach towards current critical thinking, practice and research methods within engineering management and related fields which benefits industry locally and globally.
Rationale
This programme is geared to attract and accommodate various engineering disciplines to develop their managerial skills within the requirements of their respective engineering professions. It is noteworthy that there are increasing previously disadvantaged students and female technicians and technologist who require these skills to step up their careers, to develop their theoretical knowledge, to develop their management skills, to hone their ability to apply engineering tools and technologies, to develop their ability to conduct high level scientific research, and ultimately, to enhance their place of work and the societies from which they come from.

The knowledge base and skills set allows graduates to be deployed in a range of industries throughout the economy and add value where they are placed:
• Mining, fisheries, forestry, and agriculture
• Manufacturing (e.g. processing, assembly, fabrication, etc.)
• Chemical, petrochemical, agriculture, food, cosmetics
• Construction and engineering contracting
• Logistics, transport, and warehousing
• Medical and health industries
• Engineering and management consulting
• Complex Systems – e.g. military equipment
• Banking / financial sector services)
• Professional and Management Consulting Services
Admission requirements:
• An NQF level 7 Advanced Diploma; Bachelor of Technology; Bachelor of Engineering Technology or Bachelor qualification in any of the Engineering disciplines (or related fields).
Students should obtain an average of 60% for the qualification, or 60% in the final year of the NQF level 7 qualification, or if the applicant does not have the average of 60%, an additional requirement of at least 12 months of relevant experience post obtaining the NQF level 7 qualification would be required.
If the applicant has an international qualification, that qualification must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority Unit for Evaluation of Foreign Qualifications before submission of the application (visit www.saqa.org.za).
